Project Spotlight - Heworth Green
Shackerley has helped P+HS Architects to deliver a highly sustainable £12 million office development in York for The Helmsley Group. Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated facades were supplied for Heworth Green, a striking city centre building providing 60,000 square feet of Grade A office accommodation above a large underground car park.
Exceeding the standards set within the latest Part ‘L’ building regulations in terms of sustainability and CO2 emissions, Heworth Green was designed to achieve a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating. Shackerley’s ventilated cladding has enhanced the environmental credentials of the building, providing effective protection from the elements and allowing a high level of concealed exterior insulation to be incorporated within the air cavity behind the façades to maximise thermal efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
The choice of a lightweight cladding system was important, as the building is constructed on a transfer slab above the basement car park. P+HS specified Shackerley’s ceramic granite, having used the material successfully on a previous project. Whilst it offers the aesthetic appeal of quarried stone, ceramic granite lends itself more readily to use in this type of application because of its intrinsic strength and consistency and the relative light weight of the façade panels.
Adrian Taylor, director at P+HS Architects commented; “It’s very satisfying to see Heworth Green completed and we’re all extremely pleased with the results. The building is very striking and meets our client’s brief in every way. We hope that it will become nationally recognised as a good example of a sustainable and unique development, incorporating the very best in modern architecture.”
The architects specified 1200 x 600x 12mm panels in Toscana T03 (OP). The buff coloured ceramic granite façade panel in a natural unpolished finish delivered the contemporary aesthetic styling required by the client whilst maintaining sympathy with the more traditional materials used in surrounding architecture.
By making use of Shackerley’s prefabrication services, the main contractors Tolent Construction and their cladding subcontractors, Norking Aluminium, were able to fast track the installation of the facades and benefit from having precision cutting, undercut drilling and ‘panel strapping’ carried out in ISO 9001 certified quality controlled factory conditions.
