PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: BURNLEY F.C. TURF MOOR STADIUM

Specified by: Wilson Owens Owens

Project Overview

As part of a move to ensure that all fans can access its Turf Moor ground safely on match days, Burnley FC has recently invested in a major improvement programme to create wheelchair-accessible stands. Designed by Architects, Wilson Owens Owens, the project ensures that the stadium complies with the FA’s Accessible Stadium Guide (ASG) Regulations.

The new elevations saw the club make a break from its claret and blue colour palette tradition and opt for a high-end and timeless natural black finish, using Shackerley’s SureClad® Ceramic Granite.

Design Requirements

The design team wanted a façade system that would deliver a contemporary new look and feel to the stadium. It was also important that the new façade will continue to provide a quality appearance over time.

The accessible stands project was an opportunity to upgrade the stadium visually and create contrast with the claret and blue colour palette of the existing façade; and the natural black SureClad® Ceramic Granite was chosen to deliver a high-end, modern aesthetic.

The Club wanted to feature the name ‘The Longside’ on one of the elevations, which required etching 44 panels in the relevant façade section to make up the letters.

For the interface with the existing stadium façades, selected panels needed to be tapered by between 3mm and 7mm.

Further bespoke panels were required to allow ventilation due to louvres behind the façade. This was achieved with precision drilling of 15-20mm diameter perforations spaced 20-30mm apart in each of the relevant SureClad® panels.

Materials Used

Large format 1198mm x 598mm SureClad® Ceramic Granite panels were used for the façades in natural black ‘Basilicata’. Etched, perforated and tapered panels were custom manufactured at Shackerley’s ISO9001:2015 production facility to meet the needs of the installation schedule.

Shackerley’s SureClad® system was specified as part of a Kingspan Facades’ Karrier Panel system. This innovative external envelope solution brings together Kingspan’s high performance structural insulating panels with the premium appearance and longevity of Shackerley’s fully-prefabricated Ceramic Granite cladding, and the installation benefits of Shackerley’s Queen’s Award-winning SureClad® Access System.
