What are the environmental credentials of porcelain stone cladding?

Porcelain façade systems, such as the Shackerley SureClad® porcelain stone façade system, have contributed towards BREEAM ‘Excellent’ and ‘Very Good’ ratings achieved by prestigious projects across the UK. That’s why the SureClad® porcelain stone cladding system is a go-to façade solution for many architects when specifying sustainable buildings.

What makes the SureClad® porcelain stone façade system such a sustainable cladding product?

To create the porcelain stone for our SureClad® porcelain stone façade system, the manufacturing process recreates natural forces in a controlled environment. A blend of carefully selected refined clays, quartz, feldspars and metal oxides are dry pressed and fired to create SureClad® porcelain stone cladding, in a process using temperatures so extreme that no bonding agents or resins are required for our porcelain stone façade materials. The result is natural, sustainable, durable and fire resistant porcelain stone cladding.

No waterproofing chemicals or coatings are used to treat the porcelain stone cladding material either, and the processes used to create the polished surfaces of our porcelain stone cladding panels are totally lead-free.

Shackerley SureClad® porcelain stone façade panels do not release radon or any other radioactive gases. They provide a completely inert porcelain stone façade, unaffected by UV light, and resistant to graffiti damage. This means that a SureClad® porcelain stone façade requires only minimal long-term maintenance.

Is a SureClad® porcelain stone façade a sustainable choice?

The Shackerley SureClad® porcelain stone façade range complies with the European Ecolabel Certification scheme, which confirms that our porcelain stone cladding meets specific environmental criteria throughout its life cycle – from manufacturing through to performance as an installed porcelain stone façade.

We are working hard to incorporate recycled materials into our porcelain stone facades range and, in some cases, the recycled pre-consumer waste content of our porcelain stone façade panels is approaching 40% of the final cladding product.

Many of our porcelain stone façade panels have LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) credits, demonstrating that Shackerley’s SureClad® porcelain stone façade installations provide an ideal cladding solution for low environmental impact buildings throughout the design, construction and operational phases.
