SureClad® Engineered Stone Checks in for 4* Hotel Facade
Shackerley’s SureClad® Engineered Stone cladding system has been used to create the facade for a stylish and quirky hotel within a conservation area in the heart of Manchester.
Designed by 5Plus Architects, the Yotel Hotel on Deansgate has involved the conversion of a former 1960s office block, which was stripped back to shell and core and extended with an additional two storeys.
The main contractor’s original proposal to design the facade with GRC cladding was rejected due to the constraints of the existing structure, which required a lighter weight material with slimmer cladding panels.
Cladding subcontractor RHRC Roofing & Cladding proposed the Shackerley SureClad® Engineered Stone cladding system as an alternative, which provided the opportunity for large format cladding panels and a lightweight, low maintenance facade, satisfying the needs of both the architect and the client.
To gain approval from local planners, Shackerley worked closely with the design team and RHRC, and a sample section of facade was built to highlight how well the Shackerley SureClad® Engineered Stone cladding system would fit in with the architectural context in the Deansgate conservation area.
Shackerley’s SureClad® Engineered Stone facade system was specified in a subtle grey colourway with a sandblasted finish. Elements of mica in the crushed and refined natural stone used to create the Shackerley Engineered Stone gives the cladding panels a natural reflectivity that glistens on the facade.
The Shackerley SureClad® Engineered Stone cladding system was used for a total facade area of 1038m2, providing the dominant facade material for three cores and highlighting the scale and substance of the building on the ground floor columns, thanks to the large format 3050x1240mm cladding panels, which are just 20mm thick.
The SureClad® Engineered Stone facade panels were manufactured at one of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 quality assured factories in Lancashire and the Shackerley team worked with the delivery partners to create a layout that delivers the aesthetics of a bespoke facade while using standard panel sizes. On the front elevation, the sloping pavement meant that the cladding panels had to replicate the exact gradient of the ground, and these panels were custom manufactured by the Shackerley team, with every consignment of installation-ready cladding panels numbered and delivered to site on a just in time basis to aid the city centre construction project.
The facade was installed by RHRC, using the Shackerley SureClad® Hang On primary support system. The flexibility of the SureClad® system enabled the cladding contractor’s team to work around the discrepancies in wall straightness of the legacy structure.
The completed 261 Bed hotel has 8,700 sq ft of commercial space and has been designed as an ‘eco’ hotel with a strong environmental focus. Use of the Shackerley SureClad® Engineered Stone cladding system on the facade is a key element of that story, because it is made from 95% natural stone with no Portland cement and a unique bonding agent, which has been proven to reduce the level of VOCs present in the final material by a hundredfold, while ensuring a robust, low maintenance facade.

Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding provides the ideal alternative to GRC cladding
For projects that require look a natural stone facade or GRC cladding with large format stone cladding panel sizes, Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding system is the ideal choice. Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone facade system is agglomerated stone cladding system. Unlike a GRC facade, Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding system is reconstituted stone cladding with zero cement content and very low resin levels.
Our engineered stone facades are sometime called technical stone cladding panels and are manufactured by Shackerley to provide an installation-ready, lightweight cladding engineered stone rainscreen. Our large format cladding panels are manufactured with undercut anchors for a mechanical fixed cladding solution that is secure and suitable for any engineered stone facade design requirement.
Our mechanical fixed facades mean each panel is secured with secret fix undercut anchors and our engineered stone rainscreen is produced under factory conditions to achieve the correct stone facade windload requirements
Our large format facade panels usually mean our engineered stone facades span floor to floor on larger high-rise buildings.
Engineered stone is a SureClad® product, which is an agglomerated stone facade with very low resin levels.
Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding answers the non-combustible cladding requirements of BS EN13501-1. Our engineered stone facade system is an A2 S1 D0 rated non-combustible facade to BS EN 13501-1.
