SureClad® facade for major Oxford St Project
Shackerley has supplied a complex SureClad® facade involving three different materials, c.6000 pieces, and a range of bespoke details, including fins milled from a solid block of SureStone®.
The 2000m2 SureClad® facade is part of a £132 million refurbishment and extension of an art deco department store building on London’s Oxford Street.
The existing Portland Stone facade will be restored and the Shackerley SureClad® facade will be installed for the top three stories, including the roof-top extension, complementing the heritage building with a combination of Shackerley’s SureStone® quarried granite and limestone.
Shackerley’s SureStone® will be installed on a total facade area of 1557m2 in a creamy-beige colourway and medium sand-blasted finish, which closely resembles Portland stone. We will prefabricate a total if 4131 SureStone® panels of various sizes for the facade, from 3m x 1.5 metre slabs. Along with our SureStone® panels, this includes 4760 mounted reveals, 300 bespoke angular column pieces, and bonded corner units. Some of the columns will be formed from several pieces of SureStone® bracketed and bonded together.
A further 521m2 facade area will also be completed using our fully anchored SureClad® system in a cream-coloured quarried limestone with a honed finish, comprising individually prefabricated pieces and 370 mounted reveals, which have been mitred and bonded to provide a seamless look.
Finally, Shackerley’s quarried granite in a grey colourway will be used to complete 18m2 of the SureClad® facade, contributing a further 1095 pieces and 370 mounted reveals to the complex design.
All panels, columns, mounted reveals and corner units will be fully prefabricated as fully anchored, installation-ready facade elements in our ISO 9001 certified factories. Manufacturing has been scheduled aligned to the installation programme and every piece will be quality checked and numbered prior to dispatch to site.
All cutting, precision undercut drilling, fitting of all anchors, and attachment of all SureClad® bracketry will be carried out in our quality assured factory environment, which means that the facade installer, Glaze Aluminium, will not need to carry out any cutting, or attachment of clips or straps to panels on site. This enables faster, safer and more consistent installation.
Designed by architects Studio PDP, the project is currently on site and, once completed, will provide 318,147 sq. ft mixed-use space. It continues Shackerley’s track record in high profile, complex facade refurbishments and extensions in London, which includes Gresham St Paul’s, Axtell House, and 20 Carlton House Terrace.
