SureClad® Ceramic Facade for Liverpool BTR Project
Shackerley’s SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system has been installed at The Copper House, creating a striking ceramic granite facade for the £100 million build to rent (BTR) development.
Built by construction company, GRAHAM for a Patten Properties and Panacea Property Development joint venture, The Copper House is located on the city’s Unesco Heritage Site listed waterfront.
Shackerley’s SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system was chosen for the facade by architects, Leach Rhodes Walker, who had previously used the SureClad® Ceramic Granite facade system for other projects and considered it ideal for the imposing 16-storey development.
The original design brief was for a natural granite facade, and Leach Rhodes Walker selected the Shackerley SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system in a highly polished black/charcoal colourway. The Shackerley SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system is an A1-rated non-combustible facade system to BS-EN 13501-1. Even with the addition of anti-fragmentation mesh, the facade used comprised A2-s1, d0 rated cladding panels, ensuring the building complies with fire safety requirements for non-combustible cladding on residential buildings over 18m.
As The Copper House is a waterfront development in a C4 coastal environment, located on a busy main road, the facade system needed to be able to withstand the harsh saline atmosphere, exposure to the elements and airborne contaminants. Shackerley’s SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system is U/V resistant and non-porous, so it provided the ideal facade solution.
SureClad® Ceramic Granite panels totalling, 2625m2 were prefabricated and pre-assembled at one of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 UK facade factories and supplied installation-ready to site.
Cladding specialists, FK Facades, worked with the Shackerley team to create a full-sized mock-up of a SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding corner detail to aid the delivery team’s understanding of how the junctions and interfaces would work on the facade and prove the buildability of the design. The model included a full-size pressed metal band which was installed with the ceramic granite cladding panels and flashings.
Standard Shackerley large format 1198 x 598mm SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding panels were installed, along with a number of special sizes of facade panels to complete detailing. The facade installation was using Shackerley’s Queen’s Award-winning SureClad® Access system, which allows non-sequential installation of the panels.

Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding provides the ideal alternative to GRC cladding
For projects that require look a natural stone facade or GRC cladding with large format stone cladding panel sizes, Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding system is the ideal choice. Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone facade system is agglomerated stone cladding system. Unlike a GRC facade, Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding system is reconstituted stone cladding with zero cement content and very low resin levels.
Our engineered stone facades are sometime called technical stone cladding panels and are manufactured by Shackerley to provide an installation-ready, lightweight cladding engineered stone rainscreen. Our large format cladding panels are manufactured with undercut anchors for a mechanical fixed cladding solution that is secure and suitable for any engineered stone facade design requirement.
Our mechanical fixed facades mean each panel is secured with secret fix undercut anchors and our engineered stone rainscreen is produced under factory conditions to achieve the correct stone facade windload requirements
Our large format facade panels usually mean our engineered stone facades span floor to floor on larger high-rise buildings.
Engineered stone is a SureClad® product, which is an agglomerated stone facade with very low resin levels.
Shackerley’s SureClad® engineered stone cladding answers the non-combustible cladding requirements of BS EN13501-1. Our engineered stone facade system is an A2 S1 D0 rated non-combustible facade to BS EN 13501-1.
