Shackerley creates facades with care for later living
Shackerley’s expertise in manufacturing installation-ready cladding to exacting tolerances has proved invaluable to another complex facade project, with our SureClad® porcelain stone system used for a care home project in Milton Keynes.
The Elizabeth Gardens care home will add to a national network of Porthaven care homes across England, all of which are designed and specified to an exceptional standard to provide a comfortable environment tailor-made for later life residents. Designed by Condy Lofthouse Architects and built by Kori Construction, the care home features SureClad® porcelain stone facade totalling 633m2, with a range of intricate details, including column and facia sections up into gable ends, all of which have been produced as installation ready panels in our ISO 9001 certified quality assured factories in Lancashire.
Specified in a rich cream colourway, the SureClad® porcelain stone facade areas contrast with the brick materials of the main facade elevations, while complementing the creamy colour of one of the brick types used. Large format 1198 x 598 x20mm panels were used for the project, with 1378 raw panels precision cut and drilled to provide 2152 individual pieces for the facade.
All cutting, precision undercut drilling, fitting of all anchors, and attachment of all SureClad® bracketry to the porcelain stone panels was carried out within the quality assured environment of Shackerley’s ISO 9001 certified factories, enabling us to dispatch fully pre-fabricated and installation-ready facade panels to site, aligned to the installation schedule. This means that, in accordance with the requirements of ISO TS 17870-3, no cutting, undercut drilling, or anchoring of panel attachment clips or straps etc, was required on site, whilst enabling faster, more accurate and more consistent installation, using the Shackerley SureClad® Hang On system.
The new care home has been constructed on the site of the former Great Holm fire station, close to Portway; one of the busiest roads in Milton Keynes, leading into the centre of town from the A5. The Shackerley SureClad® porcelain stone material is ideal for this busy urban environment because it is almost impossible to scratch, frost-proof, virtually impervious, preventing discolouration from weathering or pollutants, resistant to U/V, graffiti and algae. This means that the attractive cream-coloured Shackerley porcelain stone column and fascia details will retain their high-end appearance, adding to the aesthetics and prestige of the care home.

The lightweight Porcelain cladding system uses mechanically fixed large format cladding panels to create a Porcelain facade that looks great on any building. The SureClad® Porcelain cladding system is UV resistant and creates a facade that is resistant to algae and graffiti.
