Shackerley's SureClad® Facade System Combines Heritage and Innovation at SWIoT
Shackerley's SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system has been installed at the South West Institute of Technology (SWIoT), one of just 12 Institutes of Technology (IoTs) to be established in the UK to help develop the STEM skills that businesses need to grow.
Based at Exeter College and partnered by the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth, along with a number of FE colleges in the region and employers including the Met Office, babcock and TDK, SWIoT is located in an existing building, which has been refurbished and extended in a project designed by AWW Architects.
Shackerley's SureClad® Ceramic Granite cladding system was selected in a creamy beige, natural Lopar colourway, to offer a clean, contemporary facade that complements the pale stone tones of the surrounding architectural environment.
The Shackerley SureClad® cladding system has been used to deliver subtly sympathetic references to local buildings on the building's south facade. Shackerley manufactured bespoke cladding details for the sloping recessed window soffits, cills and angled returns to create splayed window reveals. Shackerley also manufactured bespoke bracketry to ensure a neat finish to the installation.
The design and specification of the SWIoT building had to take into consideration the need to construct the extension and refurbish the existing building on a tight site within an operational campus, so the new-build project was designed with a lightweight frame. The Shackerley SureClad® Ceramic Granite facade system, installed using the SureClad® Hang On support system, was compatible with the loading requirements for this construction strategy, thanks to the slim and lightweight large format, 1198 x 598mm, ceramic granite panels.
The SureClad® Ceramic Granite panels were manufactured for a total facade area of 708m2 at one of Shackerley's ISO 9001 factories in Lancashire and each numbered consignment was delivered to site aligned to the installation programme.
Charles Jordan, project director at AWW commented: “Use of the Shackerley SureClad® system not only enabled us to specify a building envelope that was compatible with the lightweight frame, it also allowed us to avoid the use of a full scaffold, which had both cost and programme benefits for the project. Shackerley's ceramic granite is non-porous, which ensures excellent resistance to algae and graffiti, and overcomes the potential for discolouration due to contaminants.”

Shackerley’s SureClad® Porcelain cladding is the ideal Porcelain rainscreen solution for any facade. The lightweight Porcelain cladding system uses mechanically fixed large format cladding panels to create a Porcelain facade that looks great on any building. Robust and hardwearing, the mechanical fixed cladding delivers a UV stable facade that will not fade or discolour over time. The SureClad® Porcelain cladding system is UV resistant and creates a facade that is resistant to algae and graffiti. The large format
Porcelain cladding panels manufactured by Shackerley for our Porcelain rainscreen system provide an installation-ready lightweight cladding, with undercut anchors for a mechanical fixed cladding solution that is secure and suitable for any porcelain facade design requirement.
Mechanical fixed facades means each panel is secured with secret fix undercut anchors and produced under factory conditions to achieve the project facade windload requirements
Shackerley’s SureClad® porcelain cladding answers the non combustible cladding requirements of BS EN13501-1. Our porcelain facade system is an A1 rated rainscreen. We offer a choice of A1 rated or A2 rated anti-fragmentation backing, resulting in an A1 rated porcelain facade or A2 S1 D0 cladding system.
