Shackerley prefabricates Portland Stone facade

Shackerley has prefabricated the Portland Stone facade panels for a prestigious high street property in London’s busy Edgeware Road. Prominently positioned on the junction with Upper Berkeley Street, 68-74 Edgeware Road sits at the gateway into The Portman Estate, in the heart of the West End. The refurbishment of the ground and first floor facades updates and enhances the property at street level, while remaining in-keeping with the building’s original design and the architecture of surrounding properties.

To achieve this, Portland Stone, a limestone typical of London’s built environment heritage, was supplied to Shackerley for prefabrication as installation-ready facade panels in our ISO 9001 certified Lancashire factories.

The project involved a large amount of special detailing, and we produced 249 finished pieces for the 28m2 stone facade. The Portland Stone material was delivered to our quality assured factory already machined to the special shapes required, and we carried out all precision undercut drilling, fitting of all anchors, and attachment of all SureClad^® bracketry to each piece. This meant that, aligned to the requirements of ISO TS 17870-3, no cutting, undercut drilling, or anchoring of panel attachment clips or straps was required on site. The result was faster, more accurate and more consistent installation.

The Portland Stone facade was installed by Adept Facades, using the Shackerley SureClad^® Hang On system, which is specifically designed for installation of the heaviest facade panels, with two horizontal rails per course of facade panels, which enables panels to be installed safely and securely.

Each Portland Stone panel was meshed with our standard A2 s1, d0 anti-fragmentation safety meshing and supplied with four or more pre-fitted aluminium brackets, secured with stainless steel undercut anchors. The brackets at the bottom of each panel are fixed and those at the top are adjustable. The panels were offered vertically flat to the substructure with all brackets engaging simultaneously with the horizontal rails. Any small adjustments needed to ensure each panel was level could then be done using the adjustment bolts in the top two brackets.

Thanks to the authentic Portland Stone Material, precision, quality assured prefabrication at UK factories, and the skill of the Adept Facades team, the completed facade delivers a high-end appearance that is completely in-keeping with the building’s original design and neighbouring properties.
