Shackerley’s SureClad® Sandstone arrives at Leeds Station
Shackerley’s SureStone® facade system has been installed as part of the £46.1 million Leeds Station Sustainable Travel Gateway project.
Using sandstone quarried in Yorkshire and processed as fully prefabricated, installation-ready facade panels at our ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire, the project is part of a programme of improvements that support active travel and ensure that people can enter, exit, and wait for taxis and urban transport services safely.
A collaborative project led by Leeds City Council, Network Rail, and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, the Sustainable Travel Gateway project has been designed and engineered by SYSTRA who specified Yorkshire sandstone for the bicycle storage and taxi queue improvements. Shackerley was able to demonstrate how, as a leading UK facade supplier, we could manufacture fully prefabricated sandstone facade panels to high technical standards and exacting tolerances.
We worked with the architect to agree quality and aesthetic criteria for the stone, making a joint visit to the quarry as part of the specification process. The 88m2 facade was specified in a beige/buff colour sandstone with a 150-grit finish. We prefabricated the 40mm thick facade panels as installation-ready 892 x 442mm panels, along with a variety of other sizes, for installation using the Shackerley’s SureClad® kerf system.
Unlike our SureClad® Hang On facade fixing system, which features our innovative secret fix undercut anchored fixing system and is usually used for the installation of our quarried stone facade materials, the SureClad® kerf fixing system uses horizontal support rails, along with vertical ‘T’ or ‘L’ profiles and SureClad® helping-hand primary support brackets. To install SureClad® quarried stone facades using our SureClad® kerf system, the stone facade panel is supported by a slot, which is cut into the upper and lower edge of the panel during manufacturing at one of our ISO 9001-certified factories. The installer then uses our bespoke SureClad® kerf clips to fix the panel in place on the upper and lower rail.
The SureClad® quarried stone facade at Leeds station was installed by ProClad Developments Ltd and the Sustainable Travel Gateway project will be completed this spring.
