BrickClad® delivers for Safestore Kingspan project
Shackerley’s BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick cladding system has provided an ideal solution for a self-storage unit in Hackney, used in combination with Kingspan Quadcore Karrier panels.
The project in the Lea Bridge area of the London Borough is for Safestore, the UK’s largest provider of self-storage facilities. It has leveraged the cost and efficiency benefits of fixing the BrickClad® Magnelis® support rails directly to the Kingspan Quadcore Karrier panels.
Avoiding the need to install a substructure by fixing the BrickClad® rails directly to the insulated wall panels, the installation technique used is proven in numerous projects and the combination of Kingspan Quadcore Karrier panels and the BrickClad® mechanically-fixed brick cladding system has now been CWCT-certified for installation in this way as a robust and compliant facade build-up. This efficient installation method also overcomes any need for cavity barriers.
There is a growing demand for self-storage facilities, with 64.3 million sq ft of self-storage space now available across the UK. For the Safestore Lea Bridge facility, there was a planning requirement for the facade to be in-keeping with local residential properties and Shackerley was able to accommodate this with a combination of two different bricks, each in a standard 215 x 65 x25mm size, contrasting a warm beige colourway with a dark red/brown.
Designed by Smalley Marley Rispin Architects and constructed by main contractor, UC Build, the Safestore Lea Bridge unit uses the Shackerley BrickClad® mechanically-fixed brick cladding system for a total facade area of 266m2. The facade has been installed by Gale Construction, using the patented Magnelis® steel rails designed by Shackerley and manufactured in-house at our ISO 9001 certified Lancashire factories using our bespoke roll forming equipment. We manufacture the BrickClad® rails using 0.7mm thick Magnelis® coated steel, for enhanced brick facade durability and service life. Magnelis® steel offers significantly improved protection than galvanised steel and is self-healing, ensuring that the BrickClad® rails are protected from nicks and abrasion on site. BrickClad® rails are also available in stainless steel.
BrickClad® and Kingspan Quadcore Karrier panels are an ideal combination for this type of project. The Kingspan Quadcore Karrier Panels provide a high-performance solution, delivering industry leading thermal efficiency – more than twice that of mineral fibre - allowing thinner & lighter walls. Meanwhile the BrickClad® system provides the traditional look of a brick facade, with the buildability benefits of contemporary construction methods.
