Shackerley’s BrickClad® goes green at Vaux Brewery site
Shackerley is supplying our BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick cladding system for the redevelopment of the former Vaux Brewery site in Sunderland, including bespoke green glazed BrickClad® bricks that have been specially produced for the project. Founded in 1806, Vaux Brewery brewed beers including Sunderland Best Bitter for almost 200 years before the facility closed in the early 2000s, and the site is an important part of the city’s heritage. It is now being redeveloped as the ‘Vaux housing neighbourhood’ by Sunderland City Council as part of the ambitious Riverside Sunderland regeneration masterplan.
The phase 1 project, comprising 135 homes, including maisonettes and apartments, is being constructed as a low carbon neighbourhood with communal green spaces and views of the River Wear.
Shackerley worked with architects Building Design Northern to respond to a brief that called for two types of brick: a traditional red, and a glazed green. We have supplied the red bricks from our BrickClad® Saxony range and specially produced the glazed green bricks, complementing the riverside location and the development’s focus on sustainability and green spaces.
The Shackerley BrickClad® mechanically fixed brick cladding system will be installed on a total facade area of 2234m2, with the glazed green bricks utilised for a 1447m2 area, and the remaining 784m2 completed using the BrickClad® Saxony red bricks. Installed by roofing and cladding contractor Certa, the system includes our SureClad® primary support system and our BrickClad® Magnelis steel cassette rails, which are made in-house by Shackerley at our ISO 9001 certified factories in Lancashire.
We have supplied all bricks for the A1 rated non-combustible facade in a standard 215x65x25mm size. The Certa team will fix the Magnelis® steel BrickClad® cassette rails to our SureClad® primary support system and insert the bricks into the lip of the rails, securing them in place with a rubber mallet, before finishing the facade with mortar.
The project adds to a growing portfolio of Shackerley BrickClad® installations, combining the durability and aesthetics of authentic bricks with the versatility, buildability and building performance of a mechanically fixed brick rainscreen facade. This project also demonstrates Shackerley’s ability to go the extra mile to supply bespoke, off-catalogue facade materials when required to meet the specific design requirements of the project.
