Lancashire ventilated facade specialist Shackerley has extended its Queen’s Award winning Sureclad range with a new collection of large format terracotta cladding panels. Because they are installed in conjunction with a Sureclad system, these panels, measuring 1200mm x 600mm, provide a variety of additional aesthetic design options for architects and their clients and significant benefits for their installation contractors and maintenance teams.
The new ‘single skin’ terracotta panels are manufactured by Soladrilho, Portugal’s leading manufacturer of extruded terracotta and unglazed ceramic tiles and slabs, and are prefabricated at Shackerley’s Lancashire factories under ISO9001 accredited quality controlled conditions. Using a sophisticated drilling process and a patented undercut anchoring system to provide a safe and stress free mechanical fix, special Sureclad straps are attached to the rear of each terracotta panel to render them compatible with the Sureclad ‘Access’ carrier system.
By using undercut anchors Shackerley allows specifiers to achieve sleek monolithic ventilated facades uninterrupted by visible fixings. There is considerable scope to use these terracotta panels in a wide range of projects as Soladrilho supplies a versatile palette of 13 traditional and contemporary colourways. The facility to use the same Sureclad carrier system to install both large and smaller format facade panels, and to combine terracotta with another material such as ceramic granite across an elevation, opens up a wide range of exciting facade styling options for creative specifiers. Shackerley has sophisticated in-house cutting facilities and can precision cut the large terracotta slabs into bespoke sizes and a multitude of smaller modular formats that minimise waste.
Unlike most other terracotta cladding systems, Sureclad does not require panels to be interlocked in any way: indeed all Sureclad ventilated facades are open vented. This means that the erection of a prefabricated Sureclad facade is a comparatively rapid and straightforward procedure for the installation contractor and it also enables those responsible for long term maintenance of the building to gain access to the services behind any individual facade panel.
