 Shackerley has helped P+HS Architects to deliver the highly sustainable £12 million Heworth Green development in York for The Helmsley Group, supplying Sureclad ceramic granite ventilated facades for this striking building which provides 60,000 square feet of Grade A office accommodation above an underground car park.
Exceeding the standards set within the latest Part ‘L’ building regulations in terms of sustainability and CO2 emissions, Heworth Green was designed to achieve a ‘very good’ BREEAM rating. Shackerley’s ventilated cladding has enhanced the environmental credentials of the building, providing effective protection from the elements and allowing a high level of concealed exterior insulation to be incorporated behind the façades to maximise thermal efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
The use of buff coloured ceramic granite panels in a natural unpolished finish has delivered contemporary aesthetic styling whilst maintaining sympathy with more traditional materials used in surrounding architecture.
The choice of a lightweight cladding system was important, as the building is constructed on a transfer slab above the basement car park. Shackerley’s ceramic granite offers the aesthetic appeal of quarried stone, but lends itself more readily to use in this application because of its intrinsic strength and consistency and the relative light weight of the panels. The architects specified a 1200 x 600 x 12mm format.
