Shackerley’s ventilated facade transforms 1920s shoe factory

Shackerley has helped Metropolis Architecture Ltd to transform a 1920’s Leicester shoe factory into a contemporary complex of 44 luxurious apartments, supplying a dramatic and eyecatching Sureclad ventilated rainscreen for the main south facing elevation of the building.

The original characterless factory frontage now boasts a gently curved façade constructed of 1200 x 600mm panels, which appear to be made of exposed oxidised metal with all its variegated colouring and texture. The façade panels are actually made of hardwearing ceramic granite but a special surface treatment has resulted in the distinctive ‘metallic’ appearance and gives the façade a high degree of reflectivity.

The Shoe Factory complex is believed to be the first UK exterior cladding project to feature ceramic granite panels with this innovative aesthetic finish.
