Introduction
to Tactile Paving Surfaces
Following
the recommendations of the Department of the Environment, Transport
and the Regions (DETR) for Tactile surfaces, the Shackerley fully
vitrified ceramic granite ALL WEATHER TACTILE TILES comply with
the requirements of the DETR, as well as the Joint Mobility Unit
of the Royal National Institution for the Blind (RNIB) having successfully
taken part in their User Trials at Euston and are in service in
a number of major Railtrack stations including Victoria, Euston
and Manchester Piccadilly.
The two types featured in this brochure, CORDUROY Tile for steps,
ramps in ON-STREET LRT Stations and level crossings and the BLISTER
Tile for platform edges in OFF- STREET Railway Stations, LRT and
London Underground (LUL) are designed and manufactured to the extremely
high standards of all MIRAGE ceramic granite tiles. These standards
include a 25 year performance guarantee, resistance to chemical
and physical attack and the exceptional properties of ceramic granite
as detailed.

Durability
The combination of ceramic granite and corundum, a naturally occuring
element second only in hardness to diamond with a hardness of Mohs
9, results in wearing properties that exceed those of concrete tactile
paviours by a factor of four to one. With a blister height wearing
tolerance of only 0.5mm, this advantage is vital to the life and performance
of a tactile surface, as well as being stain resistant and resistant
to acids and alkalies.

Colour Integrity
The colours are permanent, achieved by the use of mineral pigments
fused throughout the body of the tile - non-fading, unaffected by
weather, wear or contamination. Available in two colours complying
with the proposed pallette of the RNIB, T3 Beige and T14 Anthracite
to provide the required contrast to the surrounding flooring to aid
the partially sighted in recognising the tile and its significance.
Shackerley All Weather Tactile Tiles can be used internally and externally
to achieve a clear contrast to asphalt, terrazzo, concrete, quarry
tiles and other flooring surfaces.

Dimensions
Shackerley Tactile Tiles, as well as conforming with British and European
tandards, comply with the requirements of the Joint Mobility Unit
of the RNIB and the DETR for size of tile - 400 mm x 400 mm, The domes
on Platform Edge Tile 5 mm +/- 0.5 mm and the raised ribs on the Corduroy
Hazard Tiles - 6 mm +/- 0.5 mm. This dimensional consistency, together
with exceptionally high anti-wear properties ensures a very long and
satisfactory performance.

Anti-Slip
The inclusion of corundum in the body of the tiles provides the anti-slip
properties complying with London Underground and Railtrack requirements,
exceeding 45 when wet tested by pendulum method. This ensures satisfactory
and safe performance in both interior and exterior locations. Complementing
the Tactile Tiles and contributing to safety, the Mirage ORION range
of ceramic granite floor tiles also exceed the LUL anti-slip requirements,
are easier to keep clean than conventional anti-slip tiles and are
available in eight colours and varying sizes in addition to the 600
x 600 mm used in Railtrack projects. Full details and specification
plus samples available on request. |
