Design
Shackerley chose to work in partnership with Seves because of the way this world leading manufacturer has transformed the humble glass block into an object of design. The result is an entire portfolio of innovative and stylish glass blocks which communicates directly with the world of design and architecture.
The Design line has been developed thanks to the contributions and experience of leading architects and designers who have who have shared the manufacturers desire to reinterpret the glass block concept.
Seves offered its very first Tailor Made service to Renzo Piano. This groundbreaking collaboration was instrumental in the development of a number of unique and highly innovative new technologies which ultimately led to the creation of the winged Pegasus glass block. This mould-breaking design with its extended edges or wings has dramatically reduced the visibility of joints between glass blocks, a feature which results in a sleek and uninterrupted all glass surface.
So the intrinsic shape of the glass block has been an important factor in its transformation and repositioning. Colour also brings a completely new dimension to the glass block concept. Seves initially introduced nine pastel colours in addition to the traditional clear glass block and greatly increased their desirability. More recently the manufacturer has introduced the Mendini Collection, a range of brightly coloured blocks, whose vibrant tones and brilliance draw inspiration from the colours of nature and precious stones.
Timeless projects such as Maison Hermès in Tokyo, the Tiberios Baths in Panticosa on the Spanish Pyrenees and the Library of the University of Deusto have all involved collaborative pioneering design work and have led to the creation of unique glass block designs which can now be found in Ginza Collection, and the Trapezoidal and the Doric ranges.
The glass block has been enriched by this work, and its shape, size, colour and technology have been transformed, resulting in a new and extraordinarily expressive set of creative tools for architects and interior designers.
